(However in 2014, the National Institutes of Health funded a research that ranked the university third.) The residents acquire practical experience in big medical centers like Moffitt-Long Hospital, San Francisco General Hospital, Mount Zion Hospital, UCSF Orthopedic Institute and San Francisco Veterans’ Hospital.
The John Hopkins University was ranked fourth and second by the Anesthesiology Schools and the National Institutes of Health respectively. The university provides a 3-year advanced residency training program. It also offers a four year categorical residency. This is a six-year program that offers eligible students a $30,000 annual scholarship.
Stanford University in Palo Alto, California is ranked fourth by National Institutes of Health and sixteenth by the Anesthesiology Schools. Its residency program runs for three years. During this period, the students are trained at Stanford’s Anesthesia Simulator Center and Preoperative Anesthesia Clinic. They also acquire medical experience at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, Veterans Administration Palo Alto Health Care System, and Stanford University-Packard Children’s Hospital. During the first year, residents get two months training in their specialty fields including obstetric anesthesia, critical care medicine, pediatric anesthesia, cardiovascular anesthesia, thoracic surgery anesthesia, advanced airway management, regional anesthesia and neuro-anesthesia. Stanford’s anesthesia department also provides eligible students with one to two year fellowship in pain management, pediatric care, critical care, and obstetrics.
